Internet installation has begun!
Thank you for your patience as we extended our network in Seven Springs and Grantham. In Seven Springs, special thanks to Mayor Stephen Potter, Lisa Cash, and others on the town council for their support throughout the whole process. In Grantham, we had to add new LTE antennas on the Sutton TV & Radio tower to reach the community in advance of getting on the tower by the Middle School. We realize it has taken us a long time (hurricanes and rain didn’t help), but we are finally here.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will I get service?
Seven Springs
We started turning up customers on Piney Grove Church Rd and Crocus Lane north of town last week, and will be turning up customers along Hwy 55 next week. We are starting with the Type 1 (see more below), clear line-of-sight customers, as well as the Type 2 non-line-of-sight customers in the downtown area. We will be reaching out to you to schedule installations. The order in which we are going is those closest to the water tower will be contacted first, and then we will work our way farther from the tower. We are also going to make a special effort to reach the Cemetery Rd area as soon as possible.
Grantham
We have been turning up customers around the Sutton tower, expanding north as we go. Most of the customer installations have been along Thunder Swamp and Bowden Rd., but we’ve now started turning up service on Oberry Rd. We started with the Type 1, clear line-of-sight customers, but are now ready to start turning up Type 2 non-line-of-sight customers closer into Grantham. We will be reaching out to you to schedule installations. Some of you placed deposits with us a year ago (thanks for your patience!) and we will attempt to schedule your homes first if at all possible. After those, the order in which we are going is those closest to the tower will be contacted first, and then we will work our way farther from the tower.
We have many people on the waitlist so it is going to take us a few months to get everyone activated. If you are receiving our emails then you are on our list and will be contacted – there is no action you need to take until called. We will send out this newsletter each month to keep you informed.
What kind of service available?
We use fixed-wireless technology which beams internet to your home from our nearest tower. The internet goes on a fiber circuit in Mount Olive and back to our data center. Latency is very low and the speed is very fast – far superior to satellite, DSL, or cellular hotspots. We have two types of antennas:
Type 1 requires a clear line-of-sight between your property and the water tower. We can deliver the following speeds on this type:
25 Mbps download, 25 Mbps upload for $39.99/mo with no installation fee
50 Mbps download, 50 Mbps upload for $59.99/mo with no installation fee
100 Mbps download, 100 Mbps upload for $79.99/mo with no installation fee
Service is unlimited usage and there are no data caps or overage charges.
Type 2 does not require clear line-of-sight, and will work through trees. However due to the technology and extra equipment costs, we can only offer the following:
25 Mbps download, 3 Mbps upload for $39.99/mo with a $99 installation fee.
Service is unlimited usage and there are no data caps or overage charges.
We will try Type 1 at your house and use it if at all possible as it gives you the fastest speed at the lowest cost. However if your house requires Type 2, and most of the homes on our waitlist fall into this category, we will still provide service much faster than what is available on DSL or satellite.
How does billing work?
We bill online-only, which means you will need to fill out our online form and enter either a credit card or your bank account number. We bill each month in advance, starting at the date of installation.
What if my neighbors and family members want service too?
Please ask your family and friends to sign up on our website. The best way to get on the list is to sign up directly, not to email/call us (we are often on job sites).
Is Open Broadband going to deploy antennas on more towers?
Yes. We are working with Wayne County to mount antennas on the tower by the Grantham Middle School and to erect a new Rohn 25 tower at the new EMS station on Indian Springs Rd west of town. This is going to take several months, but we are hopeful they will be up this summer. The county has agreed to let us use these towers to provide high-speed internet to local residents.
Interested in working with us?
We are looking to hire entry-level installation representatives (see job description). Interested applicants should email a resume to info@openbb.net for consideration.
